The fundamental weakness in our society is that we have - since our beginnings - conflated the goals and rules of capitalism with the goals and rules of democracy. It's not that we have an imperfect democracy, and "off the rails" capitalism. The mostly men and the women who depend on those men assumed they would be protected from the wrath of small d democracy, as they have pretty much always been, and they are. If only they were forced into it....They were not, except by the very tules they play by.
Couldn’t agree more. (Except in the sense that the older I get, and the worse things get, the further left I shift.) This why the distant threat of communism, though not really communism itself, is good for ordinary folks. We need to find a reason again that the oligarchic class should fear us.

I am still gobsmacked, even after seeing Stephen Miller ape Himmler at Madison Square Garden, that Trump chose “America First” as a slogan, given its history. As is so often the case with that man and his movement, I had to ask: is that ignorance or intent?
With Epstein, in a similar way, I can’t help but think that explanations are overdetermined. Was he killed because he is part of a global intelligence operation that needed to keep him quiet? Or was he killed because the president is a rapist and wants to keep it quiet? Are Epstein’s “friends” beyond the pale, or all too common? I really do not have any answers.
